Rethinking self-care: managing cognitive load for sustainable careers

Self-Care Day offers an opportunity to reflect on how we support our well-being in demanding professional environments. While self-care is often framed around reducing stress or recovering after periods of strain, this view can overlook another contributor to burnout: cognitive load.

Cognitive load is the mental effort required to process information, manage competing priorities, and make frequent decisions. In high-demand fields, sustained cognitive load can quietly build over time, contributing to mental fatigue and exhaustion. Rethinking self-care to include cognitive load management shifts the focus from only recovering after strain to building more sustainable work practices.

Self-care is not limited to what happens outside of work; it also includes how work is structured, prioritized, and supported. Noticing early signs of mental overload—and responding before exhaustion becomes the norm—helps professionals protect their focus, energy, and long-term well-being. Individual strategies matter, but they are most effective when supported by workplace environments that acknowledge cognitive demands. Clear communication, thoughtful workload distribution, and leaders who model sustainable work habits can create a culture where well-being and performance can support one another.

As we approach Self-Care Day on July 24, there is value in broadening how we define care for ourselves. Beyond rest and recovery, self-care in a professional context can include understanding and managing the mental demands of our work. By addressing cognitive load, we can support immediate well-being while building the foundation for longer-term sustainable careers.

To continue that conversation, CPA Assist is hosting an upcoming webinar with Dr. Jaleh Shahin on July 22. The session, Beyond Self-Care: Cognitive Load and Professional Longevity, will move beyond traditional self-care approaches to explore how cognitive load and workplace demands shape the day-to-day experiences of accounting professionals, and what can help support well-being in a more sustainable way. You will gain insight into common stressors and cognitive demands in the accounting profession, broaden your understanding of well-being beyond physical and emotional health, and learn practical strategies to support sustainable performance and professional longevity.

If you are ready to rethink self-care and take a more practical approach to managing the mental demands of professional life, this session offers a timely opportunity to gain insight, reflect on your current habits, and identify strategies that support both well-being and career longevity.
