Self-care: A leader’s number one protective factor

Self-care: A leader’s number one protective factor

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words self-care? Some may think of face masks and pedicures, while others may think of meditation and journaling, but what is self-care and why is it so important? International Self-Care Day is July 24, and the day is a fantastic reminder for each of us to prioritize self-care in our lives.

Self-care is a conscious habit people take to promote their physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. 1 It is fundamental for building resilience toward life’s inevitable stressors. It is important because it helps avoid burnout, promotes resilience, and sustains the individual’s productivity. Having a self-care routine or daily practice also has numerous health benefits, including reducing anxiety and depression, stress, and burnout; improving happiness; increasing energy; and developing stronger interpersonal relationships.2

And, self-care doesn’t just benefit you, it can positively impact those around you as well. When leaders encourage self-care, they are cultivating an environment for a mentally fit team to bounce back from adversity and enhance the value of their work.3  Dr. Bill Howatt, Workplace Mental Health Kenote Speaker, notes that self-care is a leaders’ ability to mitigate their risk of mental harm and promote mental health. In his talk “Self -care: The Number One Protective Factor,” Dr. Bill teaches how emotional well-being is vital for leaders and provides a framework for leadership self-care that includes practical guidance for improving and maintaining emotional well-being.
