Living his truth: the lifelong mission of Esmail Bharwani FCPA, FCGA

Esmail Bharwani FCPA, FCGA

After a long and dynamic career as a tax lawyer, columnist, educator, and philanthropist, Esmail Bharwani FCPA, FCGA is now dedicating his time, energy, and considerable passion for making the world a better place to connecting students to accessible and affordable education.

A firm believer in open pathways and continuing education, Esmail’s own education journey was a hard one after being forced to leave school at the age of 15 to support his family at home in Tanzania. Thanks to the support given to him by mentors, teachers, employers, and community members, Esmail persevered to earn both his CPA designation and a degree in law. This support, coupled with the teachings of his late parents who imparted on him to “be generous in whatever way you can,” led Esmail to establish the Bharwani School of Arts and Sciences at Bow Valley College. “Everything I do is an expression of gratitude for the many hands that lifted me,” Esmail reflects. “Education is not a privilege reserved for the few; it is a right, a responsibility, and a powerful gift we are meant to share.”

Through his family foundation—which he started with his wife of 55 years, Safana, and which has already helped more than 500 underrepresented students—the Bharwani School of Arts and Sciences offers students affordable diplomas, certificates, university transfer credits, and flexible learning options as well as scholarships and financial awards. He has also created the Bharwani Leadership Lecture Series in hopes of inspiring future generations to, like him, lead with integrity, compassion, and a desire to give back.

“Leadership is cultivated when students encounter real stories of courage, innovation, and perseverance,” he says. “Hearing directly from those who have walked challenging paths helps students broaden their perspectives and recognize their own potential.

Esmail’s desire to provide educational opportunities to those in need stems from a commitment to practicing what he preaches. Lifelong learning changed the course of his life. “It’s why I encourage everyone—especially those who fear they are ‘too late’—to take the first step,” he explains. “Education does not age. Possibility does not expire. And when we commit to learning throughout our lives, we unlock not only our own potential but the potential of everyone we go on to help.

Now 84 years old, Esmail is committed to completing what he believes to be the final chapter of his lifelong mission. He is excited to see the Bharwani School of Arts and Sciences grow, and hopes his efforts help inspire the next generation of leaders, philanthropists, and change-makers.  “Ensuring that this initiative continues in perpetuity—long after my lifetime—gives me immense peace and gratitude,” he reflects. “If I am able to see this vision fully realized, it will be, for me, a deeply satisfying culmination of the purpose that has guided my life: expanding access to education and uplifting future generations of students.”
