February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the legacy, contributions, and resilience of Black people in Canada and their communities. This year marks 30 years of Black History Month in Canada, under the theme “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations—From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”
Nadine Niba CPA shares what Black brilliance looks like in the accounting profession:
“Black brilliance in the Canadian accounting profession extends beyond technical excellence. It is defined by sound judgment, ethical leadership, and a deep commitment to protecting the public interest, which sits at the core of the CPA designation.
It shows up in professionals who combine rigour with perspective and compliance with courage, ensuring that financial reporting, governance, and risk oversight serve not only organizations but the broader public they impact. In boardrooms, audit committees, and advisory roles, Black CPAs bring lived experiences that sharpen risk awareness, strengthen accountability, and elevate decision-making.
Black brilliance is also collective. It includes those who mentor, advocate, and build pathways so the profession reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. In doing so, Black CPAs reinforce public trust and help ensure public interest remains central in a rapidly evolving economic landscape.”
