Congratulations to Steve Glover FCPA, FCA for being inducted into the Canadian Accounting Hall of Fame (CAHF) this year as a “Leader of the Profession.” Steve’s lifelong focus on quality accounting education has significantly influenced how the Canadian accounting profession has shaped its education programs. He is also known for his impactful tenure with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA), including many years as Executive Director, and his later contributions in corporate governance and finance, reflecting a monumental commitment to public interest, professional judgment, and lifelong learning.
Under Steve’s leadership, the Alberta Institute became known as one of the strongest provincial accounting bodies in Canada, recognized for its emphasis on ethics, governance, and professional competence. His tenure coincided with major regulatory, competitive, and societal changes, and colleagues widely credited him with guiding the profession through this evolution. A central theme of Glover’s leadership was his belief that education is the “head, heart, and soul” of the profession’s future. He insisted that the profession take direct responsibility for both pre- and post-certification education to ensure that values, ethics, and professional judgment were embedded alongside technical knowledge. This philosophy shaped Alberta’s approach to professional education and influenced national discussions on competency-based learning.
Steve is also credited for the creation of the CA Education Foundation, now the CPA Education Foundation of Alberta, as well as serving as one of the key architects of the CA School of Business (now CPA Western School of Business). Nationally and internationally, he also contributed to major governance reforms and education standards within the accounting profession and subsequently applied these principles in several senior corporate and board roles.
His contributions have been recognized through numerous honours, including the Fellow designation (1988), the University of Alberta Alumni Honour Award (2000), the Chartered Accountant’s Educational Foundation Impact Award (2012), the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and the Alberta Lifetime Achievement Award (2015).
