Update from CPA Alberta Board Chair Darrell Jones

On September 30, CPA Alberta Board Chair Darrell Jones FCPA, FCMA emailed an update to all CPAs as he began the second year of his term. The message included the results of the 2020 Board and Regulatory votes. Below is Darrell’s message, in case you didn’t have a chance to read it originally.

Dear CPA Colleagues:

The September 23 CPA Alberta Annual General Meeting marked the beginning of the second year of my term as CPA Alberta Chair. It has been a distinct honour to serve in this role and engage with so many of you, and I look forward to hearing the feedback and insights of more colleagues in the upcoming final year of my term.

I am extremely proud of the work that has been done in the past year. Despite the disruptive nature of COVID-19, CPA Alberta made great strides in meeting its strategic priorities and legislative mandate while providing value to its members. I encourage you to read CPA Alberta’s 2019/2020 Annual Report or view this year’s Annual General Meeting to learn about the highlights of the past year and to get more details about the operations of the organization.

The year ahead will have its own challenges and opportunities, as CPA Alberta works through the last year of its current strategic plan. I look forward to working with my Board colleagues in the year ahead to ensure effective governance is in place to help the organization achieve the goals set out in that plan and develop a compelling vision for the future.

Speaking of the Board, I want to congratulate Michelle Balmer CPA, CA and Maureen Moneta CPA, CA for being elected by their colleagues to serve. I know the skills and energy Michelle brings to our deliberations from her work during her first term, and I am enthusiastic about the perspective and talents Maureen adds to the Board. I thank all five Alberta CPAs who put their names forward for consideration for the two Board positions. Their commitment and willingness to use their skills to serve the profession are appreciated.

I also want to thank departing Board member Sonya von Heyking for her service. Sonya is incredibly passionate and committed. Her thoughtful input and energy will be missed on the Board.

Five years after its establishment, the CPA profession in Alberta is strong. That is due, in large part, to the work you and your Alberta CPA colleagues do, professionally and in your communities. So, I want to end by thanking you for your efforts. It is my privilege to serve as Board Chair and use my skills to help you and the profession succeed.

Sincerely,

Darrell Jones FCPA, FCMA
