In today’s competitive job market, your resume is not just a record of your past jobs; it’s a strategic document outlining your experience and value to potential employers. For CPAs, your resume should include more than just your technical qualifications: It should answer key questions that employers have about how you can solve their problems and contribute to their success. A well-crafted resume should highlight your unique value proposition, making it clear why you are the ideal candidate for the job. Consider the following points as you craft your resume:
- Why does the role exist?
Understanding this will help you to craft your value proposition to answer the employer’s buying motivators. Determine the company’s needs—this could be creating efficiencies, identifying risks, managing complex financial statements, ensuring compliance with regulations, or providing financial analysis to guide business decisions. - Value statements.
Your resume should directly indicate your value by outlining how your experience can resolve the employer’s needs. Rather than listing generic duties, focus on outcomes demonstrating your problem-solving abilities. A good example of this could be “managed monthly financial reporting, ensuring compliance with IFRS standards and providing actionable insights that helped reduce operational costs by 10%.” This highlights how your work makes a measurable difference to the company, such as avoiding costly mistakes or improving efficiency. By focusing on problem-solving and results, you present yourself as an asset and as someone who tackles challenges. - Ensure your qualifications align with the role.
One important question employers ask when reviewing a resume is, “How does this candidate’s qualifications align with the needs of the role?”. You should tailor your resume to highlight only the relevant skills and experiences most relevant to the job. Highlight your technical accounting knowledge and the transferable skills that make you well-suited to the role. Should you apply if you check only some of the requirements of the role? Yes! You should apply if you meet 70% of the requirements but highlight your transferable skills. - Highlight essential traits.
Beyond technical skills, employers are also looking for candidates who can fit into the company’s culture and bring value in a broader sense. Highlighting your communication skills, leadership abilities, or experience working in a team can further demonstrate how your qualifications align with the role’s requirements. - Focus on resume design.
Your resume should be easy to read, have enough negative space, be creative, and demonstrate your style and personality.
Your resume is not just a record of your past roles. If written properly, it’s a tool that captures the employer’s attention, creates interest, and positions you as the best fit for the job.
