COVID-19 has created massive global disruption, including at the individual level, where it has resulted in many experiencing higher levels of daily stress. It is normal for individuals under stress to seek out feel-good behaviours that if repeated over time can put that individual at risk. At-risk behaviours exist on a continuum and can include things such things as overeating, increased alcohol consumption, cannabis use, excess social media, ignoring self-care practices, and more.
In this presentation, Dr. Bill Howatt, one of Canada’s premier experts in mental health in the workplace, will provide insights into this important topic. Dr. Howatt will discuss how our mind plays tricks on us when we are under stress, which can result in engaging in behaviours that we know are not good for us; present tips on how to prevent at-risk behaviours from becoming habits or addictive behaviours; and teach participants who to replace at-risk behaviours with pro-social behaviours that support mental health and long-term happiness.
