Established organizations currently seeking donations
- The Canadian Red Cross has launched the 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal to help people and communities impacted by wildfires in Alberta. You can donate to the 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal online at www.redcross.ca; by calling 1-800-418-1111; or by texting ABFIRES to 45678 to donate $10.
- Several banks in Canada have committed to supporting relief efforts by facilitating financial donations at their branches for the Canadian Red Cross. Additionally, they are making corporate donations directly to the Red Cross and other relief organizations. - Calgary-based, Samaritan’s Purse is deploying a Canadian Disaster Relief team to provide safe accommodation and emotional support for Jasper wildfire evacuees at a group lodging facility in the Kamloops area.
- The Banff Canmore Foundation has established the Rocky Mountain Community Relief Fund to help the people of Jasper through monetary donations.
- The Jasper Fire: Caring Community Fund established by the Jasper Community Team Society will help the long-term recovery of the Jasper community, through working with the Municipality of Jasper’s Community Outreach Services.
Alberta Day of Caring for Jasper on July 31
This Wednesday, July 31, radio stations across Alberta will join forces for the Alberta Day of Caring for Jasper, an initiative to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross to support those impacted by the recent Jasper wildfire. The event, in partnership with the Alberta Bottle Depot Association, encourages Albertans to donate empty cans and bottles at any Alberta Bottle Depot, specifying that they are “for Jasper.” The refunds from these donations will go directly to the cause. Alternatively, monetary donations can be made online at albertadayofcaring.com or by texting RADIO to 20222 for a $10 contribution. All donations will be matched by the Alberta and federal governments, tripling the impact of each dollar donated.
Wildfire relief donation tips
To ensure your donation reaches those in need, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends donating to established charities rather than through intermediaries. It is important to verify any charities and crowdfunding campaigns before making a donation.
The BBB also suggests:
- Giving to individuals and organizations you know personally.
- Being cautious with photos. Con artists may use pictures of victims without permission to create the illusion of legitimacy, especially after major tragedies.
- Understanding that not all crowdfunding sites have the same rules.
- Prioritizing transparency. Trustworthy charities and individuals will clearly explain how the funds will be used.
- Avoiding duplicate efforts. Stay updated on official support efforts to ensure donations are used effectively.
- Beware of emotional appeals and images. Scammers often use dramatic stories and urgent pleas to exploit compassionate individuals.
- Protecting personal information. Ensure the charity’s website is secure (the web address should begin with https://) and has a privacy policy regarding the use of your personal data.
- Not all donations are tax-deductible. Donations to specifically identified individuals or families may not be deductible for federal income tax purposes. Check if the nonprofit organization is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
- Reading the fine print. Understand the terms, conditions, and potential fees associated with your donation.
- Considering specialized crowdfunding websites.
- Avoiding unsolicited donation appeals. Scammers often exploit disasters to take advantage of compassionate individuals.
Stay informed with active emergency updates
The Government of Alberta website has a list of major active emergencies and recovery information in Alberta, including evacuation and financial supports, situation updates, travel advisories, and more.
Municipal websites, including that of the Municipality of Jasper, are updated regularly with wildfire status, highway updates, recreational facility updates, resources for emotional support and mental health, and other important information.
