How to manage “returning to the office” anxiety

As offices around the country and world begin to re-open, many may be feeling concerned about the idea of returning to in-person office environments. Your worry and anxiety can stem from a variety of concerns, such as risk of infection, new social expectations, and the adjustment to new work and at-home routines.

With this in mind, Dr. Keith Dobson, professor of clinical psychology at the University of Calgary, has some practical advice for those feeling stressed or anxious:

Remember that feelings about returning vary

The idea of returning to an in-person work environment varies from person to person. As organizations start welcoming employees back, some team members may be excited and relived, while others might have a harder time adjusting to the in-person work dynamic. It’s important to remember that what works for you might not work for others and to be mindful of others’ feelings and comfort levels.

Plan to renegotiate social norms

Socializing and interacting with co-workers will look different than was the case before the pandemic, as many workplaces have set new rules and guidance on how to interact in-person. Plan to set healthy boundaries with co-workers and continue to follow distancing guidelines if you are feeling anxious about in-person interactions.

Use gradual exposure techniques

The best way to treat anxiety is exposure. Instead of confronting all your anxiety at once, slowly introducing yourself to the stressor will help you adjust your comfort level. You can test small get- togethers with a few friends or co-workers and monitor your feelings. Over time, your stress and anxiety towards the situation may change.
