The profession and the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of Alberta (AFOA Alberta) have launched an innovative pilot program in accounting education for Indigenous learners. This groundbreaking program will strengthen the CPA profession and better reflect Canada’s diversity by increasing the presence of Indigenous people within accounting.
Recognizing the obstacles faced by Indigenous learners in post-secondary and professional education, the program seeks to redefine the conventional approach to accounting education. The incorporation of Indigenous perspectives ensures culturally relevant education and fosters an environment where diverse perspectives are shared.
The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit subject matter experts and is enriched with a breadth of Indigenous content, context, and culture to provide a pathway for success that respects Indigenous traditions and experiences. The recognition and affirmation of Indigenous peoples within the learning materials and approach is a first in accounting education.
The learning resources will be made available to post-secondary institutions across Canada in accordance with the deeply held value of sharing prevalent in Indigenous communities and the CPA profession’s commitment to reconciliation. This distribution will facilitate the adoption of this innovative approach and enhance societal understanding of Indigenous culture.
The pilot phase introduces two specialized courses: the CPA Professional Education Program Core 1 Module (May to September 2023) and Introductory Financial Accounting (IFA) (May to October 2023). The courses are taught by Indigenous instructors and cover key accounting principles, financial reporting, taxation, assurance, and business strategy, in an approach that is sensitive to and reflective of Indigenous peoples.
CPA Alberta is firmly dedicated to promoting Indigenous education and has made substantial contributions to this cause. CPA Alberta has a history of active engagement with Indigenous communities, including the 2016 No Limits initiative led by the CPA Education Foundation. We continually seek out fresh avenues to fortify the accounting profession and assist aspiring CPAs, so we are excited to be involved in the Engaging Indigenous Learners program. This is a unique opportunity to foster Indigenous education and cultivate a more inclusive and diverse landscape within the accounting and business sectors.
The first fully Indigenous courses are already underway, and CPA Alberta is proud to note two courses are being provided on the Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta. Alberta-based students make up the majority of the participants in this pilot program.
Ongoing support, including career mentorship, tutoring, networking, and access to additional resources, will be provided to Indigenous learners by the CPA Western School of Business (CPAWSB) and AFOA Alberta. These supports will be led by Indigenous individuals and are designed to create a strong support system to surmount the barriers that Indigenous learners face throughout their educational and professional journey.
The initiative aligns with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and invites partnerships with community leaders, businesses, organizations, and Indigenous CPAs to support similar future initiatives.
