From the boardroom to neighbourhoods, CPAs across the province are making a difference in Alberta every day. That’s why in November, CPA Alberta’s Community Impact Days are highlighting a few CPAs who are giving back and making an impact in their communities. Carrie Takeyasu CPA, CMA
For many, making an impact in the community presents itself in many forms. Take Carrie Takeyasu CPA, CMA—in addition to her role as Associate Vice President (Finance) at the University of Lethbridge, she is also an avid volunteer within her profession and the community of Lethbridge.
When not busy with work, Carrie dedicates her time and effort with local organizations such as the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, the Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO), the Lethbridge Lost Soul Ultramarathon, Special Olympics, Operation Rednose, the Lethbridge Seniors Centre, and the Alberta Japanese Canadian Curling Bonspiel Committee.
When reminiscing on her past volunteer projects, Carrie singles out her involvement with the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Society, where she was able to combine her CPA skills with her passion for volunteering. That work led to the development and implementation of a new format for the Society’s annual budget and monthly financial reports, which included the development of reserve funds. This provided the Board of Directors with a clear and precise picture of the Society’s financial status and contributed to the Society becoming a financially stable organization.
Another way Carrie has made a difference is through her volunteer with the curling team for Special Olympics Alberta. She says that witnessing the athletes’ enthusiasm for the sport inspires and motivates Carrie to continue volunteering.
In fact, Carrie speaks passionately about all of her volunteer experiences. Carrie succinctly sums up her motivations and the rewards of being involved by explaining, “I enjoy giving back in ways that are meaningful and impactful.”
