Many stories, one profession: Honouring Asian Heritage Month

May is Asian Heritage Month—a time to recognize the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent. At CPA Alberta, we’re proud to celebrate the many CPAs who bring their diverse perspectives and talents to the profession.

The Spring issue of Dividends features Ruby Mah CPA, CA and Julia Mah CPA, a mother and daughter representing two different eras of the accounting profession. Ruby, now retired, earned her designation in the 1980s, long before individual computers were standard in the workplace. She remembers using shared desktop machines, mailing assignments by post, and learning new software as it slowly emerged. For her, adaptability and the right attitude were key to navigating change.

Julia, who earned her CPA designation in 2023, came into the profession during the pandemic—a time of remote learning, Zoom classes, and new ways to build team connections online. Like her mother, she sees technology as a tool that enhances, rather than replaces, the work CPAs do. Her story reflects a new generation of professionals who are embracing automation, digital tools, and strategic thinking to move the profession forward.

We’re also proud to celebrate two of this year’s Achievement Award recipients: Melissa Gee CPA, CA and Tiffany Chow CPA CA, who are both deeply committed to giving back.

Tiffany, a partner at EY and Early Achievement Award recipient, lives by the values of kindness, empathy, and collaboration. She believes in leading as part of a team and views success as something to be shared. Through her work with organizations like WIN House and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, she brings those same values to life in the community.

Melissa, Managing Director at RSM Canada and Distinguished Accomplishment Award recipient, is passionate about helping others but acknowledges the challenge of limited time and resources. What drives her forward is the moment when “ideas come to fruition and the community comes together for each initiative.” For Melissa, the impact—even if small—is always worth the effort.

These stories showcase the diversity of experience, values, and leadership within the CPA profession. From family legacies to community impact, CPAs of Asian heritage continue to help shape the future of accounting in Alberta.
