Happy National Volunteer Week

Volunteerism is integral to our province, and many Alberta CPAs seize every opportunity to give back. Each volunteer contribution—big or small—has the power to influence and inspire and build a wave of change.

While it’s known volunteering has a positive impact on a community, it can also be a tremendous boost to the volunteer.

Volunteering builds connection

A great way to make friends, strengthen existing relationships (volunteer together!), network, and generally meet new people, volunteering strengthens your ties to your community and connects you with people you might not otherwise meet.

Volunteering can advance your career

Unpaid work is still work—you are learning and gaining experience. It can be a great way to try out a new or different career, increase skills like public speaking or communication, and show your commitment and passion.

Volunteering is fun

Finding volunteer work that is meaningful and interesting can be an escape from the 9 to 5 and give you renewed motivation, creativity, and vision. It can be a great way to embrace a hobby or passion while giving back to your community—think walking dogs for an animal shelter or helping plant a community garden.

Volunteering is good for you

It’s true! The meaningful connections that can come from volunteering can help counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. Volunteering can give you a sense of purpose, increase your self-confidence, and help you find joyful movement. All great things for your body and mind!
