CPAs are often sought after for board roles, due to their expertise and integrity. Doing so can boost your career and expand your network.
A recent article from CPA Canada provided some tips on preparing for a board role. They include:
- Take formal training. Director education programs and courses on governance are available through a variety of sources, including CPA Alberta, CPA Canada, and the Institute of Corporate Directors.
- Seek out a mentor. Finding a mentor with significant board involvements can be key in developing appropriate skills and understanding the demands of a governance role.
- Network. Broadening your circle of contacts can help you find the right board opportunities.
- Gain exposure. Moving around to different departments and volunteering for new projects will result in a greater breadth of skills and allow you to offer more insights in a governance role, where you need to have a sense of the entire organization.
