Black History Month: Honouring legacy, inspiring the future

February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the profound impact of Black Canadians and their communities. The theme for 2025, “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations,” encourages reflection on the contributions of Black Canadians in shaping our nation while inspiring continued progress toward equity and inclusion.

Harriet Tinka CPA, CMA

In recognition of this theme, CPA Alberta invited a few members of the Black CPA community to share their stories—highlighting their journeys, achievements, and the lasting impact they’ve made within the profession and beyond. Through these stories, we honour the past, celebrate the present, and build a stronger, more inclusive future.

In the first edition, Harriet Tinka CPA, CMA shares part of her story:

What inspired your journey to becoming a CPA, and what role has your cultural heritage played in shaping your career?

My father often shared an African proverb: ‘Those who use their money wisely build a home; those who squander it build regrets.’ This became a guiding principle in my life. Growing up in Kenya, I saw how financial stewardship was uplifting families and strengthening communities. This sense of responsibility led me to become a CPA. Accounting isn’t just about numbers—it’s a tool for empowerment, helping individuals and businesses achieve stability and growth. My heritage instilled the belief that financial wisdom is the foundation of success, and as a CPA, I have the privilege of guiding others toward it.

How do you see your role as a CPA contributing to positive change, either within your community or the profession as a whole?

As a CPA, my role goes beyond managing numbers—fostering trust, leadership, and accountability. Through my work, I’ve managed projects that directly impact communities, such as city infrastructure and initiatives that empower underrepresented groups. With EmpoweredMe, I expand financial literacy beyond the basics, especially for youth, helping them build the confidence and skills to shape their financial futures. In the profession, I am an advocate for diversity and inclusion, ensuring that voices from marginalized backgrounds are represented and have a meaningful influence on decision-making. Through these efforts, I aim to create lasting positive change within both my community and the accounting profession.

Are there particular moments, mentors, or lessons that stand out in your path to where you are today?

One defining moment was leaving my corporate career to pursue social entrepreneurship. It was a leap of faith, but it taught me that stepping away from comfort often leads to a more significant purpose. I’ve been shaped by incredible mentors—leaders who thoroughly saw my potential before I did. And the most important lesson? Resilience isn’t just about pushing forward; it’s about knowing when to pause, process, and progress. That mindset has guided me through challenges, both professionally and personally.
