The benefits of embracing EQ in your career journey

The benefits of embracing EQ in your career journey

In today’s competitive job market and fast-paced business environment, it’s not just your technical skills and qualifications that make you stand out—it’s your emotional intelligence (EQ). Employers are increasingly recognizing the value of EQ and actively screening for it in the hiring process. According to a Forbes article that surveyed hiring managers, a remarkable 71% of them stated they valued emotional intelligence in an employee even more than traditional IQ. Furthermore, 59% claimed they would pass up a candidate with a high IQ but low emotional intelligence.

The implications are clear: understanding and harnessing your emotional intelligence can significantly impact your career success, whether you’re embarking on a job search, considering a career change, or looking to improve your leadership abilities in an existing role.

Considering the EQ 2.0 model competency wheel (pictured) can uncover some of the competencies that are rigorously tested in a job search.

The EQ 2.0 Model Competency Wheel

Essential EQ competencies for the job search

Here are some of the key EQ competencies that can play a pivotal role in your career journey:

1. Emotional self awareness: Those with effective self-awareness possess a clear understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, and how these aspects relate to their career. This self-awareness equips job seekers with a powerful tool to present themselves authentically and confidently.

2. Assertiveness: Effective assertiveness enables job seekers to communicate openly and defend their values in a socially acceptable, non-offensive manner. It’s particularly valuable in interviews and when receiving advice on your job search.

3. Problem solving: Individuals who excel in problem solving rarely allow their emotions to cloud their judgment. They understand how their emotions impact the career decisions they make, making them adept at navigating obstacles.

4. Stress tolerance: Effective stress tolerance empowers job seekers to face setbacks and challenges with resilience. They believe they can manage their careers in a positive and constructive manner, even in the face of adversity.

5. Optimism: Optimistic individuals are resilient and adaptable. They see change as an opportunity and often distinguish themselves as “star performers” who can motivate and inspire others.

EQ in leadership roles

Leaders who possess high EQ benefit not only from increased self-awareness, but also from the ability to inspire and influence those around them. A few key EQ competencies that are especially crucial in leadership roles include:

  1. Problem solving: It’s fair to say all accountants are probably good logical problem solvers, BUT not every problem is addressed with pure logic. Emotions factor into solving problems.
  2. Interpersonal skills: Effective leadership requires the ability to deal with a wide variety of individuals, including, for example, clients, management, auditors, and other departments. Strong interpersonal skills build relationships and maintain a harmonious work environment.
  3. Happiness: Leaders who exude positivity, optimism, and confidence tend to receive better responses from their teams. Positivity can be contagious, making it easier to motivate and lead others.
  4. Self-regard: Projecting confidence in your work and abilities is critical for leaders. Confidence inspires trust and respect among team members and colleagues.
  5. Emotional self awareness: Leaders who are aware of their emotions and how they impact their performance can make more informed decisions and manage their teams more effectively.
