Summary of major decisions and discussions: December 7, 2023 CPA Alberta Board meeting

A regularly scheduled meeting of the CPA Alberta board was held on December 7, 2023. Below is a summary of key decision items and discussions from that meeting:

  • The board ratified the decision of the profession’s Council of Chief Executives to extend the terms of the Global Accounting Alliance Reciprocal Membership Agreements until December 2028.
  • Currently, Alberta CPAs who have received Fellowship in the profession in another jurisdiction in Canada are not formally recognized as Fellows in Alberta. The board approved a change that would allow for those individuals to be formally recognized as Fellows—by using the FCPA designation—in Alberta. The Board delegated to the Registrar the authority to authorize such a registrant to use the “Fellow” designation in relation to the registrant’s registration with CPA Alberta.
  • The CPA Alberta Directives were amended to explicitly allow for requesting, on a voluntary basis, the self-disclosure of membership diversity information in order to determine and report on the diversity of Alberta CPAs and to develop professional education programs, recruitment activities, and other DEI initiatives and strategies.
  • An updated Tax Policy was approved for the organization.
  • A 4% increase in CPA Western School of Business learner fees was approved for 2024/2025.
  • An amended Terms of Reference for the Achievement Awards Review Committee were approved and board member Rick Mussenden CPA, CA was appointed to that committee as an ex-officio member.
  • CPA Alberta board member Julie Oliver CPA, CA was appointed to the CPA Education Foundation Nominating Committee.
  • As per the Alberta Blue Cross Benefits Corporation Act and Regulation, CPA Alberta appoints a member of the profession to the Alberta Blue Cross Nominating Committee. Steven Glover FCPA, FCA was appointed by the board for a three-year term in that role.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the CPA Alberta Board is February 29, 2024.
