It’s no secret that there’s been major uncertainty for some time now in regards to employment in Alberta, and the unemployment rates continue to rise. With that uncertainty, layoffs and downsizing are on the minds of all employees, CPAs included. With that in mind, there some suggestions and tips that CPA Alberta Career Advisor Javier Vinsome put together to help you deal with downsizing or the threat of downsizing.
Before the Downsize
If your company is currently cutting down, or you have a feeling it may be a possibility, you should find ways to reinforce to the decision-makers in your organization that you bring value, in order to increase your chances of retaining your role. In the short-term, this can be as simple as being present and accountable, or as deep as finding alternative ways to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. In the long-term, ensuring you stay on top of the latest trends and technology, and engaging in long-term career planning, can help ensure your career path maintains its trajectory.
However, despite your best efforts, you may still find yourself out of work down the road, so you should proactively be working on your job search skills. This can include steps such as updating your resume, and reaching out to your network for alternate possibilities.

After the Downsize
Unfortunately, sometimes a layoff is beyond your control, and despite your best efforts, you may find yourself back on the market again. Part 2 of the LinkedIn posts on layoffs share some tips on productive ways to respond in the event that you are laid off. For example, in addition to job search activities like revamping your resume and connecting with potential references, be sure to take care of personal matters, like managing stress and developing a budget that reflects your new reality. Perhaps the most important, but also the most difficult, tips is to maintain a positive attitude.
While it’s hard to predict what’s in store for your, or anyone’s future, it never hurts to be prepared. These tips should prove useful, regardless of your future situation!
