CPA Alberta relies on the commitment, expertise, and talents of its volunteers in order to meet its objectives and its mandate. From ensuring the standards of the profession are upheld to attracting the next generation of CPAs, there are volunteer opportunities available in a number of areas.
We strive to ensure volunteers are reflective of the wide diversity of the profession and the voices and experiences of all Alberta CPAs are reflected. As such, we encourage volunteer applications from all Alberta CPAs who are members in good standing—particularly those members of equity-deserving groups that have been historically underrepresented.
While we are always looking to add to our pool of volunteers, there are two specific roles with that have a current need for qualified volunteers:
Complaints Inquiry Committee
Members of the Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC) assist CPA Alberta in maintaining the reputational obligations in accordance with the Chartered Professional Accountants Act (CPA Act), regulations, by-laws, and resolutions.
The CIC is the decision maker on whether or not allegations of unprofessional conduct are referred to the Discipline Tribunal Roster Chair for a hearing.
Time Commitment: One eight-hour meeting day four times per year, with an additional minimum preparation time of 10 hours for each eight-hour meeting day. These positions have a minimum three-year term.
Discipline and Appeal Tribunal
In most circumstances, both Discipline and Appeal Tribunals are comprised of three members—two CPA Alberta members appointed from CPA Alberta’s Discipline and Appeal Tribunal roster and one public member appointed from the Public Member roster established by the Government of Alberta. We are seeking to add to the Discipline and Tribunal roster.
Discipline Tribunals conduct hearings as to whether a Registrant’s conduct constitutes unprofessional conduct, through processes set out under the CPA Act.
Appeal Tribunals hear the appeals of certain decisions as set out under the CPA Act. Under that Act, Appeal Tribunals are given broad powers in relation to the appeals that come before them. The vast majority of appeals that are heard by Appeal Tribunals relate to the decisions of the CIC Chair to dismiss discipline complaints or the decisions of Discipline Tribunals.
