Alberta CPA, Dr. Karim Jamal FCPA, FCA was recently inducted as a “Leader of the Profession” into the Canadian Accounting Hall of Fame (CAHF). The CAHF was established to recognize and honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of the Canadian accounting profession or, as Canadians, significant contributions to the development of accounting elsewhere in the world.
Karim is a CPA Alberta Lifetime Achievement Award recipient who dedicates his career to advancing knowledge and fostering connections between practitioners, academics, and students. Since 2009, he has held the position of CPA Chair of Accounting within the University of Alberta’s Accounting and Business Analytics Department and is now in his third term as Departmental Chair. During this period, he has revamped Departmental programs and established annual Banff Summer Research Workshops. He is noted for his focus on issues of importance to the Canadian accounting profession and has made numerous contributions to the CAAA, the AAA, CPA Canada and Financial Executives International; he has published over 70 articles and has been awarded the Haim Falk Award for Distinguished Contributions to Accounting thought.
This is the third group of inductees into the CAHF. Last year’s Alberta inductees included the late Francis Winspear OC, FCA, who was recognized as a “Founder of the Profession”, along with Mike Gibbins FCPA, FCA and Dick Haskayne OC, FCPA, FCA, who were inducted as “Leaders of the Profession”. In 2021, the late Doug Baker FCPA, FCA was announced as one of the inaugural inductees.
The CAHF, created by the Canadian Academic Accounting Association, also serves as a curated biographical history of accounting in Canada; as such, it is a valuable resource for students, practitioners, and others to develop an understanding of the profession, its history, and its valuable contributions to Canadian society.
